Dean of the KEM Hospital earns a US patent for ‘stent’ that helps weight loss.
Do you know you can lose weight by controlling the blood flow in your body?
Head of the KEM Hospital, the most prestigious medical institution in our country, has recently been honored with a US Patent for coming up with an idea of aiding weight loss by controlling the blood flow.
Dean of the college, Dr. Hemant Deshmukh, a radiologist says he came up with this idea while treating a narrowed blood vessel around the small intestine. Dr. Deshmukh, as an interventional radiologist, is apt in treating blood arteries and veins by opening or closing them depending on the demand of the situation. As many do not know, the plaque buildup does not only impact heart vessels but also the vessels around our abdomen. When the mesenteric superior artery that is the major supplier of blood in the small intestine, results in a blockage; the patient suffers from a condition known as abdominal angina.
Dr. Deshmukh states that when a patient develops angina; he/she starts showing resistance to food. They develop cibophobia, fear of food which causes a loss of almost 10-20 kg weight loss. It is this association between the blocked mesenteric artery, cibophobia ( fear of food), and weight loss that propelled this research. He suggests introducing a stent-like device in the mesenteric artery that can positively aid in weight loss.
