India Records Highest Global Road Fatalities: Nitin Gadkari Admits Failure to Curb Rising Deaths

Road Transport Minister Expresses Concern Over Rising Road Crashes; Calls for Nationwide Efforts to Improve Safety

NEW DELHI: In a stark admission of the country’s worsening road safety crisis, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari confessed that India has failed to meet its commitment to reduce road fatalities by 50% by the end of 2024. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari shared his embarrassment at international conferences, stating, “I try to hide my face” when the subject of road crashes arises. India recorded the highest global road fatalities in 2023, with 1,72,893 lives lost, accounting for over 11% of worldwide deaths caused by road crashes.

Gadkari highlighted the alarming increase in road accidents despite numerous initiatives. “Instead of reduction, accidents and deaths have gone up,” he admitted, adding that India has the dubious distinction of having the worst record in road crashes since the World Health Organization (WHO) began publishing the Global Status on Road Safety in 2010.

The minister attributed the rising fatalities to a lack of adherence to traffic rules and emphasized the urgent need for behavioral change. “The rule of law must be respected,” he said, sarcastically remarking that India might be the only country where obtaining a driving license is extremely easy. Uttar Pradesh topped the list of road fatalities with 23,595 deaths in 2023, followed by Tamil Nadu (18,347), Maharashtra (15,347), and Madhya Pradesh (13,798). A concerning 59% of all road accidents occurred on the national highway network, a major area of focus for Gadkari’s ministry.

Addressing the issue of delayed medical response, Gadkari pointed out that a Niti Aayog and AIIMS report found that 30% of road fatalities were due to a lack of immediate medical care. To combat this, the ministry has rolled out a “cashless treatment” scheme in six states, providing free medical care for seven days with a maximum coverage of ₹1.5 lakh. Over 2,100 crash victims have already benefited, with the highest treatment cost reported at ₹1.25 lakh. Gadkari assured that this scheme would be expanded nationwide within three months.

Despite the bleak scenario, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed to members of Parliament to actively contribute to road safety awareness and measures. Gadkari’s candid remarks have brought attention to the urgent need for collective action to address India’s road safety crisis and save lives.
