DMC Clarifies Dentists Are Not Qualified for Aesthetic Procedures Like Botox and Acne Treatments

In response to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed on October 30, 2024, the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has issued a clear statement regarding the qualifications of dentists to perform aesthetic procedures. The DMC clarified that dentists are not trained or qualified to conduct medical procedures like Botox injections or acne treatments. The council further stressed that only individuals holding an M.B.B.S. degree and registered with the Delhi Medical Council are legally authorized to practice allopathic medicine in Delhi.

The council’s response underscores the legal framework that governs medical practice in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. According to the Delhi Medical Council Act, 1997, any person practicing modern medicine without the required qualifications can face legal consequences, including prosecution under Section 27 of the Act. This section specifically addresses the false assumption of being a medical practitioner and stipulates penalties that can include rigorous imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to Rs. 20,000, or both.

This clarification comes in light of growing concerns about non-medical professionals, including some dentists, performing aesthetic procedures without proper qualifications. Social media influencers and unqualified practitioners have been misleading patients by advertising Botox, fillers, and acne treatments, which has raised ethical concerns within the medical community.

The DMC also encouraged the public to report any such illegal practices to the council, providing an address for filing complaints. In addition, complaints can also be submitted to the Anti-Quackery Cell of the Directorate General of Health Services, Government of NCT of Delhi.

Dr. Lakshya Mittal, President of the United Doctors’ Front Association (UDFA), shared the RTI response on social media, urging the public to take action against these misleading practices. Earlier, UDFA had highlighted the case of a homeopathic practitioner in Jind performing aesthetic surgeries, prompting calls for immediate investigation and strict actions by the authorities. This latest move by the DMC reiterates the importance of upholding ethical standards in medical practice and protecting patients from unqualified practitioners.
