Tragedy Strikes GMERS Medical College Amidst Ragging Allegations
First-Year MBBS Student Dies After Alleged Ragging Incident in Patan, Gujarat
In a shocking incident at GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Dharpur, Patan, Gujarat, an 18-year-old first-year MBBS student, Anil Methaniya, tragically lost his life on the night of November 16th. The incident reportedly occurred following a prolonged “introduction session” organized by senior students, an activity that allegedly turned into a ragging ordeal.
According to reports, Methaniya and several other first-year students were subjected to standing for over three hours under pressure from second-year seniors. The session involved singing, dancing, and verbal harassment. Unfortunately, Methaniya collapsed during this session and was later declared dead at the hospital.
The anti-ragging committee of the college promptly initiated an investigation, interviewing 26 students. As a result, 15 second-year students were identified as having played a role in the ragging incident. They have since been arrested on charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly, and use of obscene language. These students have also been suspended from hostel and academic activities until further notice.
This tragic event has once again cast a spotlight on the ongoing problem of ragging in educational institutions across India. Despite the strict laws and guidelines put forth by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to combat ragging, such incidents persist, underscoring an urgent need for more effective enforcement and comprehensive awareness campaigns to ensure student safety.
