Life Restored: Organ Donation Saves Three Critically Ill Patients
Nagpur Medical College Achieves 19th Milestone in Organ Donation
Three lives were given a new lease on life when the family of a brain-dead patient at Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur, chose to donate his organs. This remarkable act of generosity marks the hospital’s 19th successful organ donation initiative.
The donor, 61-year-old Ravindra Raut, a tailor from Rajapeth, Amravati, sustained critical injuries in a hit-and-run accident involving an autorickshaw on November 16. Initially treated at a private hospital in Amravati, he was later transferred to the Trauma Care Center at Nagpur Medical College. Despite three days of intensive treatment, Raut’s condition remained unresponsive.
After neurosurgeon Dr. Piyush declared him brain-dead, counselors Bhagyashree Nighot from the MOHAN Foundation and social worker Shyam Panjala supported the family through the emotional process. Following two days of reflection, Raut’s sons, Vaibhav and Shyam, made the profound decision to donate his organs.
Under the supervision of Trauma Care Center in-charge Dr. Abdul Qureshi and Dr. Pratik Debaji, the medical team, including Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Gawande, Dr. Rohan Roy, Dr. Soma Cham, Dr. Prasenjit Dhawale, Dr. Akshay Shende, and Dr. Vrushali Mahatme, confirmed Raut’s brain death and successfully conducted the organ retrieval.
Raut’s organs were distributed to critically ill patients in need: two kidneys were transplanted at Super Hospital and Wockhardt Hospital, while his liver saved a patient at New Era Hospital. The entire process was seamlessly coordinated by Dr. Sumit Chahakar under the guidance of Dr. Gawande.
Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye expressed gratitude and stressed the significance of organ donation. “Through dedicated management and raising public awareness, we aim to further improve organ donation rates,” he remarked.
