MP Dr. Vikas Mahatme to raise question in Parliament on blatant violation of CPCB guidelines by Nagpur BMW Disposal Operator

Looking into aggravating health hazard and ticking Biohazard bomb caused by the accumulating Bio-medical waste that has not being picked up since last one moth by the operator who has been granted monopoly by NMC to undertake the job; a delegation of Vidarbha Hospitals Association recently called upon Padmashri Dr. Vikas Mahatme, Member of Parliament to highlight the concern.

They conveyed that all authorities including the operator are bound by Central Pollution Control Board guidelines 2016. Unfortunately, in Nagpur the operator had unliterary imposed irrational charges wherein VHA had sought intervention from Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to reign in the operator who is harassing the hospitals for monetary gains. MPCB did send across a stern warning and sensitised the operator Superb Hygienic Disposals that they are bound by a statute and hence mandated by law to pick up complete waste in totality regularly within 48 hours of collection and dispose it as per laid down norms. Even after this warning, the operator continues to arm twist hospitals into paying irrational hiked up charges and if they do not pay, they blatantly stop lifting the biomedical waste. This had even led VHA to knock the doors of judiciary and they had filed a writ petition in Nagpur bench of Bombay High court in this regard.

VHA delegation brought to the notice of their Member of Parliament who is also an astute clinician that NMC usurping the rights of MPCB had even imposed absurd policies like making any waste above 300 gm per patient per day as excess weight to penalise the hospitals even though MPCB had already earmarked waste generation limit to each hospital in their consent to operate. It was conveyed that a wet adult diaper itself crosses 1.5 kg.

Dr. Vikas Mahatme showed surprise at the brazenness with which the operator is carrying out his threats without even bothered about neither CPCB guidelines nor MPCB directions and assured the delegation that he will not only raise pertinent question in Parliament but also talk to MPCB Secretary about the action being considered against the operator for non-compliance of their directives.

VHA thanked their MP Dr. Vikas Mahatme for the justified stand. Prominently among those who were part of VHA delegation were Dr. Sameer Paltewar, Dr. Anup Marar, Dr. Alok Umre, Dr. Tushar Gawad and Dr.B.K. Murali.
